EdgeData launching UAVs toward wind turbine safety
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — A new Grand Forks startup, EdgeData, is bringing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and big data to the wind farm. The company uses UAVs to gather and analyze data on the status and safety of wind turbines.
EdgeData’s BladeEdge product assess the condition of wind turbine blades via UAV inspection, which negates the need to have a human climb the tower for a manual inspection. The BladeEdge equipped UAVs fly within 10-feet of each turbine to gather data about the condition of the turbine using sensors, high-resolution photos and videos. BladeEdge is finishing beta testing now and is expecting to begin flying this month.
